Harvard University

• Harvard University's Department of Economics is among the best in the world. In 2009, "U.S. News & World Report" ranked the Harvard department first among all economics programs nationwide. The undergraduate program requires a research thesis and the program is geared towards training students for graduate study. Courses are offered in various fields including areas such as the economics of work and family and religion and the rise of capitalism. At the graduate level, Harvard offers a PhD. Areas of concentration include economic history, behavioral economics, industrial organization, monetary and fiscal policy, international economics and labor economics. • MIT has long been recognized as one of the leading programs in the field. Undergraduate economics students at MIT often study with leading professors in the. The MIT undergraduate program is heavily research-oriented. The graduate program emphasizes several areas of study: microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, financial economics, public finance, advanced theory, economic development and labor economics. MIT's economics department enrolls approximately 130 undergraduate majors and approximately 110 to 120 PhD. students.
