Colleges for a Librarian Degree

Librarian may seem like an old-fashioned profession, but today's technology still requires someone who can locate information and steer people to the ever-growing resources inside a library. Libraries are stocked with books, magazines, videos, compact discs and slides, in addition to all of the information available on the Internet. Many colleges in the United States have programs that train students not only to access information but also to collect and organize the rapidly growing data being produced.
  1. School Librarian

    • Most bachelor's degrees prepare you to work in a school library.

If your goal is to be a librarian at a grade or high school, most bachelor's degrees prepare you for that. You may want to major in education or information sciences. Another option is to minor in library sciences. Western Kentucky University is one college offering this minor. For any other type of librarian job, a master's degree is needed.

    Undergraduate Degrees

    • Only a few colleges offer undergraduate degrees in library science.

Kutztown University in Kutztown, Pennsylvania offers a bachelor of science in library sciences as well as dual bachelor of science with education.

    Specialized Librarian

    • Your undergraduate degree can help you prepare for work in a specialized library.

If you intend to be a librarian in a specialized field, obtaining a bachelor's degree in a related major is recommended. For instance, if you hope to become a law librarian, an undergraduate degree in history or pre-law studies will prepare you well. Medical librarians benefit from undergraduate studies in the various sciences.

    Graduate Degrees

    • Most librarians study at the graduate level.

Master's and doctoral degrees in library information sciences (LIS) are offered at many colleges in America. An Internet search will result in as many as 80 schools with LIS graduate degrees. These schools span the country, including Hawaii, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
