Library Degree Programs

Accredited library degree programs are approved by the American Library Association. There are more than 50 ALA approved library degree programs in the United States alone. There are also on-line programs available. Library degrees focus on various strands of research and ways of thinking. For students who have decided on an education in this area, there are programs in nearly every state.
  1. University of Iowa

    • The Library Degree Program at the University of Iowa located in Iowa City, Iowa, is accredited by the American Library Association. Within this program, over the course of 36 credit hours, students will learn the history and foundation of the library as well as ethical and philosophical issues, principles, and procedures for handling information carriers. Also taught in the library science degree at the University of Iowa are the theories and practices of strategic management. Academic requirements for admission to the program include at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, an analytic score on the GRE of 4.0, and quantitative score of at least 1000.

    The Catholic University of America

    • The School of Library and Information Science at The Catholic University of America is accredited by the American Library Association. An adviser is provided for all students. Potential students are encouraged to attend the school for a campus visit. Requirements to be considered for admission to the program include a statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation, a grade point average of at least 3.0 and transcripts sent from all higher-education institutions. Financial aid is available through the financial aid office, as is career placement counseling.

    University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign School of Library and Information Sciences

    • The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign School of Library and Information Sciences offers a variety of programs such as information organization and knowledge representation; information resources; uses and users; information systems; history, economics and policy; management and evaluation; social, community and organizational informatics; and youth literature and services. While admission requirements to the different programs vary, the main requirements are a "commitment to education" essay, interview essay (actual interview with librarian), and a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
