How to Weld 2024 Aluminum

2024 aluminum is not considered readily weldable. Although you can weld it for an art project or for other decorative purposes, do not use it for welding any projects in which weld strength or endurance is important. For art applications, follow the steps below to TIG weld your project. As with other alloys of aluminum, TIG welding will provide a clean, precise weld and will protect the weld pool from airborne contaminants with gas.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the TIG welder to the aluminum at a 70 to 80 degree angle. Do not let the tungsten touch the aluminum. There should be at least 1/4 to 1/2 inch between the tungsten and aluminum to avoid contaminating the tungsten electrode.

    • 2

Use the foot pedal to increase or decrease the heat. As you move the welding tool, use the foot pedal to increase or decrease the size of the welding puddle to keep it roughly constant.

    • 3

Dab your filler metal, which should have similar mechanical properties to 2024 aluminum, into the welding puddle.

    • 4

Move your welding tool over the length of the surface that you wish to weld. Pull away the welding tool to end the arc.

    • 5

Leave the torch over the weld to protect it as it cools.
