The University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, offers a naval ROTC program that challenges its students physically and mentally to prepare them for future careers in government or the Navy. The program is made up of more than 160 students at any given time. Leadership skills are highly prized, and students are encouraged to take an active role within the school programs. Physical training is required each semester as well as inspections and drill competitions. In addition to major courses, all naval ROTC students are also required to take specific naval science courses, including weapons systems, navigation and the evolution of warfare.
Since 1945, the University of Wisconsin in Madison has been offering a naval ROTC program that prioritizes academics and provides students with one-on-one help and support. The battalion is usually composed of around 65 students with a diverse range of backgrounds and chosen majors. ROTC courses include naval engineering, amphibious campaigns and introduction to naval science. Each semester a physical readiness test is required, so to prepare students physical training is organized weekly throughout the school year. Extracurricular activities are encouraged and ROTC sponsored teams include drill, basketball, soccer, rifle team and color guard. Required courses include naval history, weapons systems and fundamentals of leadership.
