Florida State University, or more commonly known as FSU, was established in 1855 in the state's capital, Tallahassee. The college typically has a little less than 40,000 students enrolled, about 75 percent of which are undergraduates. Florida State houses a highly regarded undergraduate honors program, but gaining admission to the university is challenging. The average GPA for incoming FSU students is over 3.8, as of March 2010. FSU is ranked 48th on the \"U.S. News & World Report\" 2010 list of top public universities.

The University of Florida, in Gainesville, is larger than rival FSU, housing nearly 50,000 combined graduate and undergraduate students. The university ranked 47th on the \"U.S. News & World Report\" list of top universities overall in 2010, and placed 15th on the magazine's list of top public universities. Academic highlights include the nationally heralded Milken Institute for biotech research, the renowned undergraduate art program and Harn Museum of Art, and the physics program's involvement with the Large Haldron Collider in Switzerland.

The University of Miami, founded in 1925, is in Coral Gables, near downtown. Miami ranked 50th overall on the \"U.S. News & World Report\" 2010 list. It has top-tier law, medicine and fine arts programs. The university enrolls about 4,000 new students every year. The university recently launched a green initiative called \"Green U\" that has attempted to replace gasoline and other energy sources with biodiesel, as well as lessen other sources of energy waste.
