Formerly known as Okaloosa-Walton College, Northwest Florida State College changed its name in 2008. That same year, the public community college, which has a student population of about 15,000, also began to offer bachelor's degrees. The college is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In addition to a full slate of associate degree programs, Northwest Florida State now offers bachelor's degrees in project management, applied science, nursing, and education. Its associate degree programs include architecture, business, criminal justice, fire science, homeland security, and dance.

To the west of Crestview, about 10 miles north of Pensacola is the University of West Florida. Another school situated along a river, UWF offers bachelor's degrees in 49 disciplines and also has 24 master's programs. For those looking for associate's degrees that will prepare them for specialized programs in pharmacy or engineering, UWF offers those as well. Among the prominent programs available are arts, economics, communications, engineering, sciences, and theater. The university also offers educational specialist degrees in curriculum and educational leadership.

With its roots as Troy State Normal School in Alabama in 1887 to its role as Troy University today, the school has sites in 17 states. Troy University in Pensacola was begun in 1973 when the school opened sites on military bases in Florida. The university offers bachelor's degree programs in arts and sciences, communications, education, and health and human services. Its graduate level offering includes the Sorrell College of Business.
