Black Florida Colleges

Florida A&M University in Tallahassee is the largest Historically Black College & University (HBCU) in the state. Although it is not nearly the biggest, Edward Waters College in Jacksonville is the oldest HBCU in Florida. Two additional HBCUs in Florida are Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach and Florida Memorial University.
  1. Bethune-Cookman University

    • Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach is a private Christian institution that is associated with the United Methodist Church. More than 3,600 students attend Bethune-Cookman University annually, and the school offers 35 different undergraduate degrees. It began offering graduate degrees in 2007. Bethune-Cookman University fields 15 men's and women's athletic teams in 10 different sports that compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on the NCAA Division I level.

    Florida A&M University

    • Founded in 1887, Florida A&M University has an annual enrollment of approximately 12,000 students. The school offers 62 undergraduate and 39 graduate degrees at its main campus in Tallahassee. Florida A&M University also offers professional degrees at its College of Law and College of Pharmacy campuses in Orlando. Florida A&M University fields 14 men's and women's athletic teams that compete in 10 different sports in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on the NCAA Division I level. The school also has one of the most recognizable marching bands in the country.

    Edward Waters College

    • Edward Waters College in Jacksonville was originally founded in 1866 by the first African Methodist Episcopal pastor in the state. The school, which has an annual enrollment of around 800 students, offers four different undergraduate degrees in nine areas of study. Edward Waters College fields nine men's and women's athletic teams that compete in seven different sports in the Florida Sun Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

    Florida Memorial University

    • Florida Memorial University, which was founded in 1879, offers 14 different undergraduate degree programs and four graduate programs. The school has an annual enrollment of 2,000 students. Florida Memorial University offers undergraduate degrees in the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business and the School of Education. The school fields 10 men's and women's athletic teams that compete in six different sports in the Sun Conference on the National Intercollegiate Athletic Association level.
