An institution recognized as a historically black college in the state of California is the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science. Founded in the 1966, CDU evolved over the next couple of decades to become an established medical university, addressing the needs of the underserved community in the south Los Angeles region. CDU students take courses primarily in the medical sciences through the College of Medicine, School of Nursing and the College of Science and Health. Degrees offered include the M.D. and the Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) through the medical college and School of Nursing, respectively. The College of Science and Health offers bachelor's degree programs in biomedical sciences, community health, alcohol and drug studies, radiography and diagnostic medical sonography, among others. The school also offers a master's degree in public health.

Although not considered a historically black college, Stanford University was ranked in the top 50 colleges for black students in 2003 by Black Enterprise magazine. Stanford was ranked No. 7 among all programs nationwide. The list was compiled using a number of factors such as graduation rates, what percentage of the study body is African-American and social environment. Stanford's black population comprised 7.9 percent of the student body as of 2003, the highest percentage of any California school listed by Black Enterprise. This corresponds well with the 2006 list published in the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, which used NCAA statistics to show the schools in the United States with the highest percentage of graduation rates among the black student population. Stanford graduated 90 percent of its black student population. Stanford is well known for its interdisciplinary approach to nearly every area of education and offers programs of study through its seven schools, which include the schools of business, medicine, law, earth sciences, education, humanities and sciences and engineering.

Also on the Black Enterprise list with the highest percentage of black students is California State University--Los Angeles (CSULA). CSULA has a black student population that comprises approximately 7.5 percent of the student body. The Cal State system as a whole is the largest university system in the state of California with 23 different campuses and more than 430,000 students enrolled yearly. Degrees offered at CSULA are offered through one of its six schools. These include the schools of arts and letters, business and economics, education, engineering, computer science and technology, health and human services and the natural and social sciences.
