Black Music Colleges

The study of black music includes the music of Africa and the African diaspora. In the United States, black music studies generally focus on the music derived from the cultural heritage of Africans in the United States. There are a number of educational institutions with music departments that concentrate on this unique area of music studies. Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) generally have music departments that offer undergraduate study programs.   1. Fisk University

    • The Fisk University is renowned for its music ensembles, such as its acapella student singing group the Jubilee Singers, originally organized in 1871. The bachelor of arts and bachelor of science programs includes course options such as "History of Jazz" and "Crosscurrents in African and American-American Music." The Music Department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

    Hampton University

    • While Hampton University's Department of Music was officially established in 1928, the musical tradition of the institution began as early as 1868 when it opened as Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. The Department of Music offers research in early "Spirituals" songs and Gospel music tradition within black music in America. This historically black university is accredited by the NASM.

    Xavier University

    • The Music Department at Xavier University in Louisiana offers a Music major and a Jazz minor. Jazz music has its origin in African American music heritage. The music department is accredited by the NASM.

    Columbia College: Center for Black Music Research

    • The Center for Black Music Research (CBMR) was founded at Columbia College Chicago in 1893. For those studying in the Music Department at Columbia College, the CBMR offers a rich resource for music research across the African diaspora to contemporary music resources for studies into musical developments such as rap and hip hop musical genres. Columbia College offers degrees in jazz studies and contemporary, urban and popular music.
