Towson University, established in 1886, is in Towson, less than 10 miles from Baltimore. Second in size only to the University of Maryland, Towson offers more than 100 degree programs, including the study of music. Towson's department of music awards undergraduate degrees in orchestral composition, jazz composition, music education, the theory of music and vocal performance. The Towson graduate music program gives students an opportunity to earn a master's degree in composition, performance or music education.

The University of Maryland, founded in 1856, is the largest public university in the state. It is ranked 11th among all nonprivate universities in the United States. Part of the College of Arts and Humanities, the University of Maryland's School of Music offers 40 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs in the study of musical performance, music composition and music education. A unique Bachelor of Arts program allows students to major in music and another unrelated area, such as therapy.

A relatively small public institution, Salisbury University was established in 1922, and is in Salisbury, 30 miles from Ocean City, one of Maryland's top beach vacation spots. Part of the Fulton School of Liberal Arts, the music department offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in music, music technology and performance (both vocal and musical). The music department also offers a Bachelor of Arts in teacher certification for those interested in teaching music education in Maryland only. All degree programs are designed to be completed in eight semesters.
