Since its founding in 1955, Penn State has been one of the premier universities in the United States. The public four-year school has an annual student enrollment of more than 80,000 students. Of course, there is something important to note. Penn State's main campus is located north of the Maryland border approximately 150 miles from Maryland. That means that students from Emmitsburg are required to pay tuition at out-of-state rates. Penn State has more than a dozen campuses in Pennsylvania, and some are much closer to Emmitsburg. In fact, the Mont Alto campus is only about 20 miles northwest of Emmitsburg. Few universities match what Penn State offers. The school has 160 undergraduate majors with the possibility of double majors, minors and other concentrations. As well, the Mont Alto campus and other campuses offer both Bachelor's and Associate degree programs. Master's degree programs are also offered through Penn State.
