Historically Black Colleges in Maryland

Attending a historically black college can be a rewarding and exciting experience, not to mention diverse. Maryland is the 42nd biggest state in the United States and has a population of more than 5 million people. Maryland is home to several historically black colleges offering numerous degrees and areas of study. Maryland's historically black colleges are scattered throughout the state.
  1. Bowie State University

    • Bowie State University is a historically black college located in Bowie, Maryland, in the heart of the Washington-Baltimore-Annapolis region. Founded in 1865, Bowie State is the oldest historically black college in Maryland and one of the oldest in the country. With an enrollment of more than 5,400 students, its ethnically diverse faculty, staff and student body draws prospective students from all over the country. Bowie State offers more than 25 undergraduate programs of study, and 30 master's, doctoral and advanced certification programs, including programs like nursing, social work, psychology, accounting, finance, economics, management information systems, public administration, marketing, communications, computer sciences, natural sciences, English and fine and performing arts.

    Coppin State University

    • Coppin State University is located in West Baltimore and was founded in 1900. Coppin State University offers 53 majors and nine graduate degree programs, including programs like nursing, humanities, natural sciences, visual and performing arts, mathematics, history, geography, global studies, English, chemistry, biology, computer science and history.

    Morgan State University

    • Morgan State University is located in Baltimore, Maryland and was originally founded in 1867 as the Centenary Biblical Institute by the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and later renamed. MSU was a private institution up until 1939. MSU offers day, evening and online courses. Academic programs offered include marketing, accounting, management, biology, business administration, computer science, chemistry, nursing, music, mental health technology, military science, English, civil engineering, physical education, and political science.

    University of Maryland Eastern Shore

    • The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is a land-grant, historically black college located in Princess Anne, Maryland. Founded in 1896 as the Delaware Conference Academy, it was later renamed. UMES offers both undergraduate and graduate level programs of study in African American studies, accounting, engineering, applied design, history, aviation sciences, art education, business administration, business education, fashion merchandising, mathematics, criminal justice and urban forestry, among others.
