Founded in 1872, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Pharmacy was ranked first in the 2008 "US News & World Report" listings of best graduate pharmacy schools (the most recent rankings available). UCSF offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees, and features a core curriculum in pharmaceutical care, pharmaceutical health policy and management and pharmaceutical sciences. Since 1979, UCSF's School of Pharmacy has received more research funding from the National Institutes of Health than any other pharmacy school in the country. All faculty department chairs have doctoral degrees. The highly-ranked doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program (requiring four years of study) has 500 students, 65 percent of whom go on to residencies, fellowships or advanced degrees.

Ohio State's University College of Pharmacy is part of the University Health Sciences Center that also includes dentistry, nursing, medicine and public health programs. The school offers combined degrees, including a PharmD and master's of science degree, a PharmD and PhD and a PharmD and master's of business administration (MBA). The school also offers post-doctoral research fellowships for PharmD and PhD graduates, and was tied for fifth in "US News & World Report" rankings in 2008.

The University of Michigan College of Pharmacy offers a four-year PharmD program and graduate and residency programs including medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, social and administrative sciences, master of engineering in pharmaceutical engineering and a combined PharmD and doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences. Students are also provided counseling services, experiential training programs and post-doctoral training to prepare them for their careers. The University of Michigan's college of pharmacy was tied for fifth in the 2008 "US News & World Report" rankings.

The University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy has two campuses, one in the Twin Cities, the other in Duluth, offering PharmD, master's of science and doctorate degrees, four graduate programs and post-doctoral fellowships. Graduate programs include experimental and clinical pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, social and administrative pharmacy and pharmaceutics. The school has more than 600 PharmD students and more than 100 graduate students, and was ranked third in the 2008 "US News & World Report" rankings.
