The top-rated school of pharmacy in 2008 was the University of California--San Francisco (UCSF), according to "U.S. News and World Report." UCSF is renowned for its medical school and consistently ranks high. UCSF pharmacy students have the advantage of working with some of the top-rated medical professionals as they do cutting-edge research. Students at UCSF can pursue a Pharm.D. or Ph.D., either separately or together. Other joint degrees are also possible through the School of Pharmacy. These include Master of Public Health and Master of Science in Clinical Research. Departments within the school include ones in bioengineering science, therapeutic science, clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutical chemistry. UNC does not offer a Ph.D. as part of a joint-degree program. The Ph.D. and the Pharm.D. programs at North Carolina are completely separate. Research emphases of the Ph.D. program include medicinal chemistry and natural products, pharmaco-therapy and experimental therapeutics, pharmaceutical outcomes and policy and molecular pharmaceutics. In addition to a Pharm.D. and Ph.D., UNC offers a Master of Science and a number of other post-doctoral studies programs.

In addition to a Pharm.D. and a Ph.D., the University of Minnesota offers students an opportunity to pursue a Master of Science degree. Research areas covered by the master's and doctoral programs include medicinal chemistry, clinical pharmacology, pharmaceutical sciences, pharmaceutics and pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical care and health systems. The College of Pharmacy sponsors numerous research programs, including the Center for Orphan Drug Research and the Brain Barriers Research Center.
