The Times Higher Education Supplement World University Rankings for Engineering pegs Imperial College of London as the second best engineering school in Europe and 7th in the world. The school boasts of its 1,200 staff members and 5,000 students. Its faculty and students are actively engaging in research with grants amounts reaching a total of 60 million pounds. Their research strategy of changing the world through the application of engineering is evident in the research of the college's nine program departments. For example, Professor Hugh Spikes of the Mechanical Engineering Department researches Tribology, the study of friction, surface wear and lubrication in perpetually moving objects. This study has wide application, from energy-saving engines to replacement hip joints in humans.

The Engineering Department of Cambridge is the largest faculty in the university, comprising ten percent of the activities there. Like the Imperial College's, this engineering department seeks to solve the problems plaguing the world through the practical application of science and technology. To achieve this mission, it gets the best professors and students and develops interdisciplinary approaches to developing solutions. The department has six programs: Electrical, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Information Engineering and Energy, Fluid Dynamics and Turbomachinery. Students from all over England and the world flock to the university to study engineering; however, the faculty only accepts 300 of these applicants into its program yearly.

Established in 1908, University of Oxford's Engineering Sciences department already has a century's worth of experience in producing engineers whose skills are highly sought after. Each year, 160 new engineers leave the university, while 70 engineers stay to further their knowledge through the school's postgraduate curriculum. Oxford's engineering research has greatly benefited people. They are currently working on Image Guided Therapy in the Bioengineering branch. This project will help doctors to see inside the organs of their patients and more easily diagnose their conditions.
