MIT, one of the world’s most prestigious science-oriented universities, has the No. 1-ranked engineering program in the United States, according to the 2010 U.S. News & World Report list of top engineering graduate programs. It also ranks No. 1 on the magazine’s 2009 list of best undergraduate engineering programs. The Boston-area school is a leader in developing cutting edge initiatives including the Global Village Project, which brings the university’s engineering problem-solving expertise to developing countries. More than 60 percent of MIT’s undergraduates, a total of 1,886, study engineering. There are 2,794 graduate students.

Often referred to as the “MIT of Canada,” the University of Waterloo in Ontario is a highly respected science-oriented research university. It has the largest undergraduate engineering program in Canada with more than 5,700 students enrolled in bachelor's degree programs. There are more than 1,550 graduate students studying for master's and doctorate degrees. There are eight departments and 12 research centers. The school boasts that its undergraduate program is the best in the Canada and that its cooperative program Engineers Without Borders is world-famous. The school has a generous research budget, and faculty members are winners of numerous science awards.

Just 30 minutes from the Pacific Ocean, Stanford University’s School of Engineering ranks second on the 2010 U.S. News & World Report list of top engineering graduate programs and second on its 2009 list of best undergraduate engineering programs. With its proximity to Silicon Valley, where well-known companies founded by Stanford graduates are headquartered, students have easy access to industry-sponsored research programs such as the Hewlett Packard Fellowship. Approximately 25 percent of all Stanford students, about 4,000, study in the engineering department. There are nine departments and more than 65 centers, labs and multidisciplinary programs associated with the College of Engineering.
