Columbia University's undergraduate and graduate programs appear on several top 10 lists. The university's architectural design graduate program, established in 1881, was one of the first in the country. It stresses a commitment to both professional development and research. Application for admission to Columbia's Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) begins in August of the year preceding the year of admission and must be done completely online as paper applications are no longer accepted.

Yale offers a three-year master's program, a two-year post-professional master's program and a two-year program for advanced, independent research resulting in a master of environmental design.
