The Best Undergraduate Architecture Colleges

If you're high school student and wish to pursue a career in architecture, consider applying to some of the top-rated architecture programs in the country in order to maximize your chances of landing a good job. Keep in mind, however, that top programs can be extremely selective and admission is highly competitive.
  1. Cornell University

    • The Architectural Record rated Cornell's program #1 in the country in 2010. With almost 300 students, there are 24 credentialed faculty members on the staff of the Department of Architecture and almost a dozen more that teach classes there on a part-time basis; the student/faculty ratio is less than 10:1. They offer only a five-year program culminating with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. As one of the leading programs in the world, you must have great high school grades, subject yourself to a personal interview, and submit a portfolio including free-hand drawings before your application will be considered.

    Syracuse University

    • According to Architectural Record, Syracuse University's program came in second in 2010. The School of Architecture at Syracuse University is the country's fourth oldest program, and admission is highly competitive. For example, over 1,000 people applied for the Fall of 2009, and less than 150 were approved for admission. Besides completing the application to Syracuse University, you must also submit a portfolio of your artwork which will be thoroughly reviewed as part of the application process.

    University of Oregon

    • The University of Oregon's architectural program was ranked 7th by Architectural Record in 2010. The School of Architecture and Allied Arts offers degrees at both the Portland and Eugene campuses. There are over 1,600 students seeking their degrees in architecture and more than 2,000 other students take architecture courses at the school. Besides offering an undergraduate degree in architecture, the school also offers several graduate programs; a PhD in architecture will also be offered in 2011.

    California Polytechnic State University

    • Architectural Record rated this program third among all the country's architectural programs. The College of Architecture and Environmental Design is the largest program of its type in the United States, with almost 2,000 full-time students. It offers seven different degrees, and it is estimated that one of every 20 architects in the country got his degree at Cal Poly. For California, it's one in five. With over 12,000 graduates of the program, the school has had a positive impact on the worlds of construction, planning and design.
