Architecture Colleges in the UK

The Royal Institute of British Architects is the governing body of architectural qualifications in the U.K. Consequently, university and college courses work toward the three levels of qualification set by this body. Architecture can be studied at the bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. levels. A few universities offer some of the best architectural courses in the U.K.
  1. The Bartlett School

    • The Bartlett is University College London's school of architecture and it has been offering architectural education since 1841. It offers courses at a range of qualification levels from a Bachelor of Science in Architecture to a Ph.D. in Architectural Design.

Courses are designed to prepare students for professional life. For example, completion of the B.Sc. in architecture leads to exemption from Part 1 of the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) examinations. The Bartlett is particularly renowned for its Graduate Diploma in Architecture, which, according to the school's website, "has achieved international recognition for its innovative and challenging approach to architectural education."

    Cambridge Department of Architecture

    • Cambridge University is often ranked in the top five in the world both in terms of research and teaching practices by reputable rankings associations. Architecture is studied in the Department of Architecture, which is part of the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art.

Uniquely, the department offers a "BA Tripos," which combines both arts and sciences. Here 60 percent of the grade is through studio work and 40 percent is exams and other course work. The course is demanding and students are expected to work during their winter and Easter breaks. Parts one, two and three of the ARB and RIBA qualifications can all be studied through the department.

Bath Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering

    • At the University of Bath, architecture is organized through the Department of
Architecture & Civil Engineering. The department, like the university, is research intensive and has around 600 undergraduate students, 100 master's students and 35 academics.

The department offers a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) program in architecture as well as seven taught master's programs. These range from a distance learning M.Sc. in International Construction Management to an M.Sc. in Architectural Engineering: Environmental Design, which is offered on a full- or a part-time basis. M.Phil. research programs as well as Ph.D. programs are also available, although students can also go elsewhere to complete their architectural education after completion of their undergraduate study.
