Cornell University was rated the best undergraduate architecture college in 2010. Students enrolled in the Department of Architecture take courses in art, computer-aided drafting, engineering, math, behavioral sciences, and of course architecture. They study not only current architecture but also the history and theories behind it. The architecture program within the design school at Harvard University is ranked number one among America's best architecture graduate programs. Architecture students at Harvard work on real-world design issues in contemporary society. They take courses in design theory, technology, history, and visual studies. The core of the program takes two years to complete with an additional year to two years for electives and an individual design thesis.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, better known as Virginia Tech, is ranked number four for best undergraduate education in architecture and number eight for graduate education. Students in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies can choose from five separate areas of study: public policy, public and non-profit management, global development, urban planning and policy, and environmental affairs. Students can opt to study abroad in Ticino, Switzerland.
