Spelman College is a private, female-only historically black liberal arts college. Founded in 1881, the college is ranked number one by U.S. News and World Report among black colleges and is home to just over 2,200 full- and part-time students. Students at the college can pursue four-year degrees in a wide range of majors, including psychology, biochemistry and art, as well as benefit from small class sizes with a student to teacher ratio of 12 to one. Howard University is an independent, co-educational black college situated on 256 acres in the nation's capital of Washington, D.C. Founded in 1867, the college enrolls close to 7,000 students and offers four-year degrees in majors ranging from business management to drama and theater arts. The college also boasts a student to teacher ratio of eight to one, and offers services such as on-campus housing, personal and psychological counseling and financial aid to its student body.
