The highest-rated, non-university department of psychology, according to U.S. News and World Report, is that of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. U.S. News rated Dartmouth as the 45th highest-rated program in the nation. The undergraduate program at Dartmouth is divided into a general psychology track and one in neuroscience. Honors programs are available in both fields as well. The graduate program offers a Ph.D. in the fields of experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience. The graduate program is divided into three primary areas of emphasis that include behavioral, cognitive and social psychology.

Boston College (BC) also offers one of the top-rated psychology programs among all colleges in the United States. U.S. News and World Report ranked the Boston College program as the 66th highest-rated program nationwide. BC offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs in the field. The bachelor's program can be taken in conjunction with the master of arts program so students can earn both degrees in just five years. The psychology department has five primary areas of focus for graduate programs at the master's and doctoral levels, which include quantitative, developmental and social-personality psychology, along with concentrations in behavioral neuroscience and cognitive neuroscience. The department sponsors 11 different research labs, including the Infant and Child Cognition Lab and the Neurobiology of Social Behavior Laboratory.

Bryn Mawr College, a women's liberal arts college in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, is the third highest-rated program among non-university psychology departments nationwide. U.S. News rated the Bryn Mawr program as the 132nd highest-rated program in the nation. The undergraduate program at Bryn Mawr is similar to that at Dartmouth in that is offers a number of different areas of concentration, such as linical, cognitive, developmental, physiological and social psychology. The program also encourages advanced research and seminars as part of the undergraduate curriculum. A specialized interdisciplinary concentration is also available in the area of neural and behavioral sciences. For those embarking on a career in educational psychology, Bryn Mawr also offers a school psychology certification program.
