"U.S. News and World Report" rated the University of Illinois, Chicago (UIC) program as the seventh best nursing program in the nation and the best nursing school in the state of Illinois for 2007 (the last time the magazine rated nursing schools). "U.S. News" rated programs based on surveys by nursing school deans, faculty members and hospital administrators throughout the nation.
UIC's nursing program offers a bachelor of science (BSN) degree along with a master of science (MS), doctor of nursing practice (DNP) and a PhD in the field. For registered nurses wanting to obtain their BSN degree, the university offers an online program through its online campus. As one of the top five programs in the nation to receive funding from the National Institute of Health, UIC's nursing program makes logical choice for those wanting to pursue the PhD. Areas of research covered by UIC's nursing program include maternal and child health, women's health, life-threatening disease and traumatic injury, management of disease and illness, systems and services for health, end of life transitions, and health disparities. The school sponsors 10 different research centers, including an ongoing collaborative effort with the World Health Organization to develop international primary care nurses.

Also located in the city of Chicago, Rush University was ranked 19th by "U.S. News and World Report." Rush University offers a number of graduate-level degrees in nursing, including an MS, DNP and PhD. The school also offers a number of post-master's certificates in a variety of specialties such as acute care, family practice, gerontological care, pediatric care and psychiatric care. Rush University's nursing program consists of three major departmental divisions, which include the Department of Adult Health and Gerontological Nursing, Department of Community, Systems and Mental Health Nursing and the Department of Women, Children and Family Nursing.

In its 2007 study, "U.S. News" rated Chicago's Loyola University as the 40th best program in the nation. The Loyola program offers a variety of degree options beginning with the traditional BSN degree. Students with bachelor's degrees in other fields wanting to transition to the field of nursing can pursue an accelerated bachelor's degree in the field. The school also offers a non-nursing degree in the field of health systems management (BS). Graduate level degrees include an MS, DNP and PhD. The MS program also offers joint-degree programs. Collaborative efforts with the business school and divinity schools will also yield either a master's of business administration or a master's of divinity. Unique to Loyola's program is its Center for Spiritual Leadership in Health Care, a research and practical program designed to apply the concept of holistic health to the practice of nursing.
