The Best Colleges for Studying Engineering

Many of the nation's top engineering graduate schools, such as MIT and Stanford, also offer highly ranked undergraduate engineering programs. Undergraduates also can study engineering at colleges devoted almost exclusively to undergraduate education, such as Harvey Mudd College or the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. All of these schools offer undergraduate engineering degree programs in a variety of fields.
  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Engineering

    • The Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Engineering was founded in 1861. The school offers undergraduate engineering programs in eight primary fields, including aeronautical, biological, chemical, environmental and mechanical engineering. The school also offers graduate programs in 15 fields. Forty-two MIT engineering faculty members have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, and nine to the National Academy of Science. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked MIT's School of Engineering first among undergraduate engineering programs at schools that offer doctorate degrees. The same magazine also ranked MIT first among engineering graduate schools.

    Stanford University School of Engineering

    • Stanford University's School of Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in nine different departments, including aeronautical, chemical, environmental, electrical and mechanical engineering. Stanford faculty members conduct research in bioengineering, environment and energy, information technology and nanoscience and nanotechnology. Seventy-nine Stanford engineering faculty members have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, and 15 to the National Academy of Science. Eight faculty members have won the National Medal of Science, and one has earned the Nobel Prize. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked Stanford's School of Engineering second among undergraduate engineering programs at schools where doctorate degrees are offered, as well as second among engineering graduate schools.

    Harvey Mudd College

    • Harvey Mudd College is a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1955, and, as of 2009, had about 750 students. The college emphasizes undergraduate education in engineering, mathematics and science. Students working in the engineering department take courses in three primary areas, including applied sciences, systems and design and professional practice. All Harvey Mudd juniors and seniors have the opportunity to participate in the Clinic Program, a program that involves working on research and technical projects for outside clients, including laboratories and corporations. Harvey Mudd's small student population also ensures that students have the opportunity to work closely with professors and peers, often collaborating with faculty on research during the year as well as during summer research programs. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked Harvey Mudd College first among undergraduate engineering programs at schools where doctorate degrees are not offered.

    Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

    • The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, a private college that was founded in 1874, emphasizes undergraduate education in engineering and the sciences. The school's 1,850 undergraduates can work toward degrees in 16 different fields, including biomedical, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, mechanical, optical and software engineering. The school also offers selected graduate programs and enrolls about 150 graduate students. The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology ranked second in U.S. News & World Report's 2009 ranking of undergraduate engineering programs at schools where doctorate degrees are not offered.
