The Georgia Institute of Technology, commonly referred to as Georgia Tech, was founded in 1885. The university established an industrial and systems engineering program in 1924 and founded the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering in 1945. The school offers an undergraduate program leading toward the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSIE) degree. Students take classes in engineering as well as the natural sciences, humanities, social sciences and business. The school also offers master's and doctoral degree programs. In 2009, "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked the Georgia Institute of Technology first among industrial engineering undergraduate programs and fifth overall among undergraduate engineering schools.

The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor College of Engineering founded the industrial engineering department in 1956. Purdue University, founded in 1869, functions as the flagship institution of the Purdue University System. The university founded its School of Industrial Engineering in 1955. Undergraduates work toward the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSIE) degree with a specialization in human factoring engineering, operations research, manufacturing systems and production management. All undergraduates must complete a senior design project with a local Indiana industry. The school also offers a combined BSIE and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program, as well as other master's and doctoral degree programs for graduate students.
