The United States Merchant Marine Academy is part of the federal academy education system, located in King’s Point, New York. The 36-credit program, designed for working professionals and those with two years of field experience, includes coursework on electrical and nuclear power, new technology, hydrodynamics and power systems. Students complete much of the work online and may be required to attend seminars or short residencies.
The University of New Orleans offers a graduate degree that combines marine engineering with naval architecture. Coursework includes ship design and the ship’s power systems, but also includes piping and design systems for rig platforms that sit offshore. Students can also take a number of electives to specialize within the field. The school is housed in a nine-story building complete with up-to date computer labs and a 128-foot long tank for research and development. The UNO degree also prepares students for a doctoral program in applied science and engineering.
The University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, MI, offers two specialized degrees in the marine engineering graduate program: marine mechanics, and marine systems design. Coursework includes ship mechanics, ocean engineering and mobile robotic systems. In addition, the University of Michigan offers a dual master’s in concurrent marine design, blending its college of engineering and marine design. They also offer a degree combining a graduate degree in marine engineering and an MBA, teaching students the business side of the maritime industry. Beyond a master’s degree, the school also has a doctoral program in marine engineering studies.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, offers a Master of Science degree in naval architecture and marine engineering through its graduate program in mechanical engineering. Students must first take engineering courses, and then enroll in ocean-specific courses, in ship propulsion, hydrodynamics and naval architecture. The program affords students the flexibility to combine their education with another program within the engineering school to get a dual degree.
