The Best Nursing Schools in the World

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2009 list Harvard University, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford and Stanford University as the four best schools in the world in the life sciences and biomedicine category, which includes nursing. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and U.S. News rankings only include nursing schools in the United States, with University of California, San Francisco topping the NIH list and University of Washington, Seattle as number one on the U.S. News list.

  1. Harvard University

    • Obtain a nursing degree from Harvard University.

      Harvard University's School of Public Health offers a dual degree program that awards a master of science degree in primary health care from Boston's Simmons College and a master of science degree in environmental health from Harvard University. Nurses who wish to pursue more advanced training can opt for Harvard's doctor of science in occupational health. All three programs are designed to prepare nursing students for occupational health nurse and nurse practitioner certification examinations. Tuition is $35,040 per year for the master's and doctoral programs plus $2,422 per year for non-resident doctoral students as of June 2010.

    University of California San Francisco

    • The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) offers a master of science in nursing with 15 specialty areas including adult nurse practitioner, midwifery, perinatal, oncology and mental health nursing. Students choose a specialty after completing the first year Masters Entry Program in Nursing. UCSF also offers a doctor of philosophy in nursing for students who wish to pursue advanced nursing studies and research opportunities. Tuition is $15,274 per year for the master's program and $11,766 per year for the Ph.D. program. Non Residents must add $12,245 per year for the master's and $14,694 per year for the Ph.D. All rates are current as of June 2010.

    University of Washington, Seattle

    • The University of Washington in Seattle offers master of nursing (MN), master of science (MS) in nursing, doctor of nursing practice and doctor of philosophy in nursing programs. The MN program is designed for RNs with bachelor's degrees in nursing or other fields who wish to pursue further clinical training. The MS program prepares nurses and others for careers in nursing research and knowledge testing. The Ph.D. programs prepare nurses for clinical and research leadership positions. Tuition ranges from $4,854 to $8,865 per quarter depending on the program and number of credits you choose to take. Rates are current as of June 2010.
