The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston is one of the nation's best nursing programs. "U.S. News & World Report" ranked it No. 19 among all nursing programs nationwide in 2007. The school offers four different levels of nursing degrees including the Bachelor of Science (BSN), Master of Science (MSN), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and the Ph.D. The school offers various areas of specialization in nursing practice such as acute care, women's health care, adult health, psychiatric mental health nursing, adult health, pediatric nurse practitioner, family nurse practitioner, nurse anesthesia, gerontological nursing, nursing leadership and pediatric nursing. Students can also pursue a joint-degree in public health as part of the program.

Prairie View A&M University is another option for nursing students residing in the Houston area. Although not nationally ranked, it is a top nursing program by default as one of only two other Houston nursing schools offering advanced degrees in the field. At the undergraduate level students can pursue the Bachelor of Science degree. Prairie View also offers a degree completion program for registered nurses needing to finish a baccalaureate education. At the graduate level, Prairie View nursing students can pursue the Master of Science degree with specialties in nursing administration, nursing education and family nurse practitioner.

Texas Women's University (TWU) located in Denton, Dallas and Houston offers an extensive nursing program. Although the main campus is not located in the Houston area, TWU offers many of its programs through its Houston campus. Compared to other nursing schools nationwide, "U.S. News & World Report" ranked the TWU program No. 54 in the nation. The university offers the Bachelor of Science degree, Master of Science degree and the Ph.D. Areas of specialization include family nurse practitioner, adult health nurse practitioner, acute care nurse practitioner, pediatric nurse practitioner, nursing administration and nurse educator.
