The Best Nursing Schools in Southern California

Several Southern California schools have programs ranked in the top 100 nursing programs in the country according to the U.S. News & World Report Rankings of 2007. Each program offers a variety of degree options from pre- to post-licensure programs with many specialization opportunities.
  1. UCLA School of Nursing

    • The University of California, Los Angeles School of Nursing is ranked number 12 in the country by the U.S. News & World Report Rankings. The school was formed in 1949 and offers a pre-licensure program resulting in a B.S. in nursing and two post-licensure programs resulting in a M.S. in Nursing or a Ph.D. in clinical nursing research and philosophy. The school also offers many additional certifications and specializations for licensed nurses such as nurse practitioner, family nurse practitioner, and oncology nurse practitioner.

      The B.S. program is designed for those wishing to become a registered nurse and follows both individual and population based cohorts. The M.S. program is two years long and is designed for registered nurses who wish to pursue advanced nursing careers such as nurse administrators, nurse practitioners, and clinical nurse specialists. The Ph.D. program is recommended for nurses wishing to pursue the scholarly aspects of nursing and focuses on clinical research and theoretical and scientific knowledge. Applicants to the school of nursing are required to complete both a UC and School of Nursing application.

    University of San Diego School of Nursing and Health Science

    • Founded in 1974, the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science at the University of San Diego offers four degree options, a M.S. in Nursing, a masters entry program, Ph.D. in Nursing, and a D.N.P. or Doctor of Nursing Practice. The school is ranked 47 in the U.S. News & World Report Rankings. The master's entry program is designed for students with a bachelor's degree in another discipline and is five terms long which result in a Master's degree in clinical nursing. The M.S. program focuses on research, theory, and practice in nursing and is founded upon a bachelor's degree in nursing. The Ph.D. program is designed for those who wish to focus on clinically relevant scholarly research in nursing. The D.N.P. program is designed for students who wish to focus their area of advanced study on a specific specialty such as a family or mental health nurse practitioner. The University of San Diego is a Roman Catholic based school, but welcomes students of all faiths.

    Cal State LA School of Nursing

    • Tied with San Diego State University and located in Los Angeles, Cal State LA School of Nursing is ranked 72 by the U.S. News & World Report Rankings. The school offers two basic degree options, a B.S. in Nursing and a M.S. in Nursing with the specialty options of nursing education, nursing administration, psychiatric or mental health CNS, school health and nurse practitioner. Only four options for nurse practitioner are offered by the university; primary and acute adult, primary pediatric and family and psychiatric or mental health. The B.S. program prepares students for general professional nursing practice. The M.S. program furthers the B.S. program by focusing on a targeted area of nursing. Like UCLA, applicants must submit both a University application and an application to the School of Nursing.
