The Best Nursing Schools in the Nation

The best nursing schools in the nation are those that typically provide a vast selection of degree programs, advanced research opportunities and operate alongside well-established medical schools. These top nursing programs generally vary little from year to year, although they may, on occasion move up or down the rankings lists one or two slots. U.S. News & World Report ranked the top nursing programs in the nation in 2007. The top programs were those with these typical characteristics.
  1. University of Washington

    • According to U.S. News & World Report, the top nursing school in the nation is located at the University of Washington (UW). UW has an established medical school, which was also ranked by the publication as the number-one medical school in the nation for primary care in 2010. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that UW would have one of the top-rated nursing programs as well. It is the reputation of the nursing program and the care provided by the nursing staff and students that contributes to this overall perception. The school of nursing at UW consists of three primary divisions: community and psychosocial health, health systems and biobehavioral nursing and pediatric and family nursing. UW offers an undergraduate bachelor of science in nursing program, the master of science and both the Ph.D. and the doctor of nursing practice (D.N.P.). The nursing program also offers continuing nursing education programs in wound care, long-term care, ostomy management and surgical care.

The UCSF School of Nursing operates alongside the well-respected UCSF medical school, which ranked fourth among medical research institutions in 2010. UCSF also offers degree programs at all levels, except for the undergraduate level. All nursing programs at UCSF are a master's degree or higher, which is reflective of the program's research emphasis. Specializations are offered in fields such as gerontology, critical care and trauma nursing, mental health and psychiatric nursing care, oncology nursing, adult nurse practitioner, leadership, nursing and health systems, midwifery and occupational and environmental health nursing, among several others. Research at the UCSF nursing school is focused on health and environment, women's health issues, HIV/AIDS, symptom management, pediatric development, clinical practices and the human recovery process.
