The Stanford University Department of Psychology has been in existence for over 100 years and currently offers degrees at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. The university also offers visiting researcher and exchange scholar programs for doctoral students from other universities. According to Stanford University, the Department of Psychology has been recognized by the Smithsonian Institution for their top ranking as the top psychology department in the United States for over 50 years. Nine individuals have been members of the National Academy of Science, two have been members of the Institute of Medicine, and ten have been members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
The University of California-Berkeley was founded in 1868 and has a student population of over 35,000 with more than 1,500 full time faculty. The Psychology Department currently offers baccalaureate and doctoral degree programs. Admission requirements for the program are competitive as not all applicants can be accepted. Students who enter the university as freshmen must complete 80 credit hours of course work before applying to the program. The minimum requirement for admission into the psychology program are a 3.2 grade point average in seven prerequisite courses.
Harvard University awarded the first degree in psychology in 1878. There are a number of undergraduate concentrations in psychology at Harvard, among these options are a general study program, as well as mind, brain and behavior tracks. The department currently has 30 faculty members and 65 graduate students researching the disciplines of cognitive, brain and behavior, developmental psychology, clinical science, social psychology and organizational behavior.
The University of Michigan has existed for nearly 200 years, first founded in Detroit, then moving west to Ann Arbor in 1837. The Department of Psychology offers an undergraduate degree in psychology, as well as a doctoral program. The Rackham Graduate School offers advanced degrees for over 7,000 students, including those in 103 Ph.D. programs. The psychology program areas include biopsychology, neuropsychology, cognitive neuroscience and social psychology.
