Historically Black Colleges in South Carolina

The state of South Carolina has eight Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs): South Carolina State (four-year public), Allen University,?Benedict College,?Claflin University,?Morris College?and Voorhees College (four-year private), Denmark Technical College (two-year public) and Clinton Junior College (two-year private). The schools provide students from all backgrounds the opportunity to pursue higher education opportunities ranging from certificate programs and continuing education all the way to doctoral study at South Carolina State.

    • Located in Orangeburg, South Carolina State University is South Carolina’s only four-year public HBCU. South Carolina State offers a full range of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, and is the only HBCU in the state to grant doctoral degrees.

    Allen University

    • Originally founded in 1870 to provide education to freed slaves, Allen University in Columbia offers undergraduate degrees to students from all backgrounds. Allen provides degrees in eight fields of study: biology, business administration, chemistry, English, mathematics, music, religion and social science.

    Benedict College

    • Benedict College in Columbia currently enrolls 2,800 students who study in eight schools. Students can pursue degrees from the School of Business and Economics, the School of Education, the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, the School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or can enroll, if eligible, to take courses through the School of Continuing Education or the School of Honors.

    • Operated by the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, Morris College is a liberal arts college located in Sumter. The school offers undergraduate majors in biology, broadcast media, business administration, community health, criminal justice, early childhood education, elementary education, English, fine arts, health science, history, journalism, liberal studies, liberal/technical studies, mathematics, political science/history, recreation administration, social studies, and sociology.
