Central Carolina Technical College (CCTC) is a two-year school which specializes in offering weekend classes for working adults. CCTC also offers online courses and has agreements with other colleges so that students have more options for how they finish their degrees. The college has locations in Kershaw, Clarendon and Lee counties, in addition to the main Sumter campus. CCTC offers 15 types of associate degrees, seven diplomas and 33 certificates. Areas of study range from business and computer technology to agriculture, nursing and health sciences, engineering and occupational technology.

Morris College was historically an African-American liberal arts college operated by the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention, but now attracts students of all races and nationalities. Morris offers bachelor's degrees in the arts and sciences. Topics of study include political science, pastoral ministry, Christian education, health science, and early childhood and elementary education. Morris College provides students with several kinds of support services, such as peer tutoring, career counseling, textbook loans, cultural enrichment opportunities and professional workshops.

The University of South Carolina has a campus in Sumter. USC Sumter offers bachelor's programs in organizational leadership, liberal studies, education and business administration. USC also has associate degree programs in art and science. In addition, USC Sumter has an ADN to BSN program for registered nurses who already have two-year degrees. Education students can obtain a master's degree at the Sumter campus through a program offered in conjunction with the USC campus in Spartanburg.
