Area Colleges in Charleston, South Carolina

With cobblestone streets and gas lamps, Charleston, South Carolina, still has the charm of the past. The city, founded by England's King Charles II as Charles Towne in the 1600s, has survived wars, earthquakes and hurricanes. Some of Charleston's area colleges have a strong history, as well. From The Citadel military academy to Trident Technical College, students pursuing a higher education in this historic city have many options.
  1. College of Charleston

    • Founded in 1770, the College of Charleston mixes a historic campus with modern facilities and programs. This state-sponsored college offers more than 100 majors and minors. (According to the school's website, the College of Charleston is the only college in the United States to offer an undergraduate program in discovery informatics.) This school also offers master's degree programs, as well as credit and noncredit continuing education opportunities for residents of the South Carolina lowcountry. Outside of class, students at the College of Charleston can enjoy more than 20 NCAA Division 1 sports teams and a wide variety of clubs and organizations.

    Trident Technical College

    • Trident Technical College is a public, two-year institution that serves both traditional and nontraditional students. TTC offers associate's degrees, applied technical associate's degrees, diplomas and certificates. Among the more than 150 programs students can choose are health sciences, agriculture, business, computer technology, industrial technology, engineering technology and public service. TTC also offers continuing education programs.

    Charleston Southern University

    • Founded in 1964, Charleston Southern University is a Christian university affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention. According to the school's website, Charleston Southern University was named to the John Templeton Foundation's Honor Roll of Character Building Colleges. It was also named one of "America's 100 Best College Buys."

      Charleston Southern offers 30 majors and awards bachelor's and master's degrees. It offers graduate programs in business, criminal justice, nursing and education. Outside of class, students can participate in many clubs and organizations and enjoy the school's NCAA Division I Big South Conference sports teams.

    The Citadel

    • Founded in 1842, the Citadel has a rich history in Charleston. The Citadel's Corps of Cadets draws students from across the globe. Students study under a military system, and about a third of the graduates accept military commissions, according to the school's website. Among the programs offered at The Citadel are business, education, humanities and science. The school also offers a civilian evening program.
