Ten Historically Black Colleges

Historically Black Colleges and Universities are nationally accredited colleges established before 1964 for the purpose of educating African Americans. Today, these institutions offer young people of any race the opportunity to train in various skills, explore interests and develop talents that will prepare them for careers as entrepreneurs and professionals in both the public and private sectors.
  1. Howard University

    • Howard University in Washington D.C. was established in 1867. Today it is one of only 48 private Doctoral/Research universities in the United States. It consists of 12 schools offering degrees in more than 120 programs. Graduates from Howard include six Fulbright Scholars, a Rhodes Scholar, a Truman Scholar and nine Pickering Fellows.

    Spelman College

    • Atlanta's Spelman College is an all female college founded in 1881. Spelman is partners with Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, Clark Atlanta University and the Interdenominational Theological Center. It has 2,000 students working on bachelor's degrees in majors such as drama, economics, French, English, biology and chemistry.

    Morehouse College

    • Atlanta's Morehouse College is an all male school created in 1867. It offers bachelor's degrees in business administration, humanities, science and mathematics. "The Wall Street Journal" named it one of the top schools for sending graduates to professional schools and "Black Enterprise" magazine considers it the best school for African-American men.

    University of Arkansas Pine Bluff

    • The Arkansas State Legislature created the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in 1873 for the well-being of the "poorer classes." Today the university enrolls more than 3, 500 students in a wide range of majors, the most popular include nursing, business administration, criminal justice, biology and early childhood education.

    Delaware State University

    • When Delaware State University opened in 1891, its students chose from five bachelor's programs: chemical, agricultural, engineering, classical and scientific. A teacher's program was created in 1897. Today the school has more than 3,756 students and 64 bachelor's degrees, 22 master's degrees and five doctoral degrees.

    Savannah State University

    • Savannah State University was established in 1890 as the Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth. It became a full-time degree granting institution in 1928. A full university since 1996, Savannah State enrolls about 3,600 students and offers 22 bachelor's degrees and four graduate degrees.

    Morgan State University

    • Baltimore's Morgan State University opened in 1867 as a seminary. It expanded to educate teachers in the 1890s and became a state university in 1939. Today Morgan State has 6,000 students of various backgrounds studying the arts, sciences, education, engineering, social work, hospitality and architecture.

    Alabama A & M

    • Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical began in 1875 with two instructors and 61 students. Today it offers bachelor, professional and graduate degrees to more than 5,800 students in six schools. The school's range of majors include food science, urban planning, computer science, social work, art education and clinical psychology.

    Tuskegee University

    • Booker T. Washington founded Tuskegee University in 1881 with one instructor and 30 students. Today it enrolls nearly 3,000 students, employs 900 people and offers more than 49 degrees in five colleges. Programs include business, information systems, engineering, architecture, veterinary medicine, nursing, health and physical science.

    Florida A & M

    • When Tallahassee's Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University opened in 1887, it had two professors and 15 students. Today it offers 62 bachelor's degrees, 39 master's degrees and 11 doctoral doctoral degrees to nearly 12,000 students. Popular majors include journalism, architecture, computer information sciences, business, sociology and pharmaceutical science.
