Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is a historically Black public university located in Thornbury Township, Chester County and Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Originally established in 1837 as the African Institute, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is the oldest higher education institute for Black Americans. Today it is a diverse university that accepts students of various ethnicities, races and nationalities.

Lincoln University's most notable alumni include Gil Scott-Heron and Langston Hughes. Thurgood Marshall received his undergraduate degree from Lincoln University.

Hampton University is located in Hampton, Virgina. It is a historically black university and was founded by the American Missionary Association to provide an education to freedmen. Hampton University is also predominantly black, with 91 percent of its student population African American.
Located in Tuskegee, Alabama, Tuskegee University is a historically black college and predominantly black university. The campus is a National Historic Landmark because it is the site where famed World War II Tuskegee Airmen trained.

Xavier University of Louisiana is the only Roman Catholic university that is also predominantly black. The university was established in the early 20th century by a Catholic community devoted to the education of African and Native Americans.
