What Four-Year Colleges Are in Virginia?

A number of the nation's top-rated universities are located in Virginia, including the University of Virginia and William and Mary, but the state is also home to a number of highly respected liberal arts colleges and universities that offer degrees only at the baccalaureate level or have a limited number of graduate degree programs.

    • Averett University in Danville is one of the nation's top four-year baccalaureate colleges. "U.S. News & World Report" ranked Averett University as the No. 36 college in its best baccalaureate college rankings in 2010. Averett offers traditional undergraduate programs and accelerated programs for working adults as well. It does also offer a limited number of graduate programs at the master's degree level in business and education. Although classified as a university, Averett enrolls only approximately 800 to 900 students annually. Undergraduate degrees offered by the university include fields such as accounting, aeronautics, theater, sports management, math, medical technology, equestrian studies, athletic training, criminal justice, religion and traditional liberal arts fields.

    Bluefield College

    • Bluefield College in Bluefield also rated highly, at No. 40 in the nation in the "U.S. News & World Report" rankings. Bluefield College is a small private liberal arts Christian college that enrolls 700 to 800 students each year. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, BC is an affordable option for those seeking a private college education, at $13,180 tuition per year (as of the 2009-2010 academic year). BC consists of eight primary academic divisions through which students can pursue baccalaureate degrees: business; social science; science and math; Christian studies; language, literature and communications; education; fine art and exercise sports science.

    Virginia Intermont College

    • Virginia Intermont College in Bristol was recognized by "U.S. News & World Report" as a third-tier baccalaureate college. Like BC and Averett University, VIC is a small private college that enrolls approximately 550 students each year. Founded in 1884 as Southwest Virginia Institute in Glade Spring, the college outgrew its facilities and moved to Bristol in 1891. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and offers degree programs in various fields such as art, biology, business administration, theater arts, sports management, social work, religious studies, psychology, legal studies, English, history, equine studies, pre-law, political science, photography, physical education and interdisciplinary studies.
