The University of Texas (UT) at Austin is the top rated graduate school for the study of accounting in the United States. "U.S. News & World Report" placed the UT-Austin program at the top of list of accounting programs in the nation in 2009. Three options are available for UT students to pursue their Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) degree. Students with a bachelor's degree can enter into a 12 to 18 month traditional MPA program. A second option, which is primarily for UT undergraduates, is a joint-degree that leads to both a bachelor of business administration (BBA) and the MPA. The third option allows UT students in the economics department to earn both a bachelor of arts in economics and the MPA. All three programs prepare students to pass the CPA exam.

The second highest rated accounting program in the nation is at the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton School of Business). "U.S. News & World Report" ranked the program No. 2 in the nation in 2009. Wharton's accounting program is one concentration within its MBA program. The school is known its interdisciplinary programs, including the MBA in conjunction with the Juris Doctorate (JD) offered through the law school or the Master of Arts (MA) degree in environmental studies or international studies. Wharton's students specializing in accounting often pursue a second major in finance to supplement their studies.

The third highest rated accounting program in the country, according to "U.S. News & World Report," is the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Illinois offers multiple graduate degree programs including a Master of Accounting Science (MAS), Master of Science (MS) with specialization in taxation, a MS in accountancy and the PhD. Students in the PhD. program develop competencies in economics, statistics and accountancy as part of the program. Areas of concentration within the graduate program also include information technology and finance.
