"U.S. News and World Report" recently ranked the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Special Education at Michigan State University as the top graduate counseling program in the country. The school offers a master of counseling degree program, which prepares and certifies students to assist individuals with personal issues, in such areas as academics, development, mental health, substance abuse and occupational issues. Graduates often go on to work with families, businesses, schools and in private practices as guidance counselors, social workers, occupational therapists and family therapists.

The university offers a master's of science in counseling degree program that takes about two years to complete. Each student chooses an area of concentration; choices include school counseling, community counseling and college counseling. Before earning a degree, students learn case conceptualization, presentation, counseling skills, multicultural counseling, ethics and AODA counseling.

The College of Education at Pennsylvania State University was recently ranked third among all graduate counseling programs in the United States by "U.S. News and World Report." The school offers a PhD program in counselor education and a master's degree program in school counseling. The PhD program trains students to provide counselor education on the collegiate level and administer advanced counseling practices and theories. The master's degree program in counseling allows students to choose from a variety of specializations, including general professional counseling, rehabilitation counseling and secondary school counseling. At the end of the program, students are qualified to become certified counselors.
