Which Colleges Are Known for Engineering?

Three of the top five colleges for engineering worldwide are located in California, according to "U.S. News & World Report." The publication ranks the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as the top engineering school, followed by Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, and the California Institute of Technology at No. 5. Each of these schools features famous alumni who have gained recognition as inventors, astronauts and engineers.
  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

    • The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is renowned for its technology programs, but engineering is also a staple at the school. MIT, which has an annual enrollment of more than 10,000 students, offers nine major areas of study within its School of Engineering. Of MIT's 4,232 undergraduate students in 2009, almost 1,900 of them chose engineering as their major area of study. More than 60 MIT graduates have gone on to win the Nobel Prize.

    Stanford University

    • Stanford University, which has an annual enrollment of around 19,000 students, features seven schools that offer undergraduate degrees in 72 different areas of study. Stanford University also offers graduate and professional degrees. In 2009, more graduate students chose engineering as their major area of study than any other subject. Of the school's 8,400 graduate students in 2009, almost 3,300 earned engineering degrees. Stanford University has prominent graduates in the field of engineering: Three famous engineering graduates are responsible for inventing the 56K modem, GPS units and Dolby noise reduction in stereos and sound equipment.

    University of California, Berkeley

    • The University of California, Berkeley, has an annual enrollment of almost 36,000 students. The school comprises 14 colleges and schools and it offers more than 130 different areas of study. UC Berkeley offers students undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. The most popular area of study at the school is engineering, with almost 1,000 students choosing electrical engineering as their major. Among famous alumni of UC Berkeley are the co-founder of Apple, the co-founder of Intel and the CEO of Google.

    California Institute of Technology

    • The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) might not roll off the tongues of those discussing engineering colleges, but the school has produced 31 students who have won the Nobel Prize. Caltech has a small student body, with an annual average of around 2,100. Two of Caltech's six academic concentrations are focused on engineering: chemistry and chemical engineering, and engineering and applied science. Caltech is ranked at the top of the schools that receive the most annual U.S. patents.
