According to the Michigan State University Engineering Department's website (egr.msu.edu), students at the school go through a special program: "At MSU, a process we call Spartaneering prepares our graduates to open the doors to excellence and innovation from day one on the job."
Michigan State, located in East Lansing, Michigan, has nearly 3,000 engineering undergraduates in six different engineering departments: biosystems and agricultural engineering; chemical engineering and materials science; civil and environmental engineering; computer science and engineering; electrical and computer engineering and electrical engineering.
At the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (engin.umich.edu), the state's largest college, there are more than 5,000 engineering students pursuing degrees in 12 different engineering departments. The different departments offer a variety of engineering degrees, some only found in the state at the University of Michigan. Among the notable departments are the nation's second-ranked industrial and operations engineering department for undergraduates -- according to U.S. News and World Report (2010) -- nuclear engineering and radiological sciences and naval architecture and marine engineering.
Western Michigan is located in Kalamazoo, Michigan and is home to more than 25,000 students. Engineering is a focus of the school. The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (wmich.edu) is located in the largest building on campus, in a 343,000-square-foot, $100 million center built in 2003. The school offers a variety of engineering disciplines to student, including electrical, mechanical and civil engineering, as well as computer science. Paper engineering, chemical engineering and imaging is a specialty program offered at Western Michigan.
Wayne State University in Detroit invested in its engineering department (eng.wayne.edu), opening an Engineering Development Center in April 2009 for departments and labs studying nanotechnology and alternative energy technology. The department is also part of the Wayne State University research and development park called TechTown, which develops new companies based on university research. The college has 10 engineering departments, including departments focused on alternative energy, material science engineering, electrical engineering and electric-drive vehicle engineering.
