Top Colleges for Aeronautical Engineering

Students reaching for the stars have their choice of several top aeronautical engineering colleges. These colleges prepare their graduates for careers designing, constructing and testing aircraft, missiles and spacecraft.
  1. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

    • In 2009, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Aerospace Engineering program was ranked the best in the nation for the 10th straight year, in the "U.S. News & World Report" annual list of the top U.S. colleges. The university has residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Florida and Prescott, Arizona, as well as more than 130 Worldwide Campuses and an online program. Degree programs include associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral programs. According to the college's website, Embry-Riddle is the world's largest accredited university for aerospace and aviation, granting degrees in 35 fields. Its graduates have gone to become military, commercial and corporate pilots. U.S. Air Force pilot Scott O'Grady and astronaut Nicole Scott are both Embry-Riddle graduates.

    Massachusetts Institute of Technology

    • Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)'s school of engineering ranked first nationwide in the 2009 "U.S. New and World Report" annual list of the top-ranked universities in the U.S. The private, co-educational university, which first admitted students in 1865, offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in aeronautical engineering. Its department of aeronautics and astronautics, known as MIT AeroAstro, prepares graduates for careers in the fields of aircraft and spacecraft engineering, space exploration, the military, and air and space telecommunications.

    U.S. Air Force Academy

    • The U.S. Air Force Academy is an option for aeronautical engineering students who want a career in the Air Force. If accepted into the program, the Air Force covers all costs of a student's education, estimated at more than $415,000, and pays a small monthly stipend to attend the academy. Each cadet graduates with a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. In return, the student agrees to serve in the Air Force for at least five years following graduation. The academy, located outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado, has rigorous admission requirements. In addition, applicants must be appointed by their U.S. senator or representative.
