Community Colleges for Culinary Arts in Connecticut

The foodservice and hospitality industries are big business in Connecticut and beyond. Whether you want to pursue a career as a chef or restaurant manager, completing a culinary arts certificate program at a community college can set you apart from the competition. Several community colleges in Connecticut offer culinary arts classes and programs.
  1. Manchester Community College

    • MCC's 160-acre suburban campus is only ten minutes from downtown Hartford. MCC has a 30-credit culinary arts certificate program that is designed to prepare both full- and part-time students for commercial food-preparation careers. The MCC foodservice laboratory facilities include two commercial production kitchens and three dining rooms. Facets of the program include menu preparation; catering events; preparing basic, regional and ethnic foods in quantity; safety and sanitation in accordance with Connecticut state law; front of the house set-up and operation; managerial and human resource techniques; and management problem-solving techniques. Past graduates of MCC's culinary arts program have earned advanced placement status in programs at Johnson & Wales University and at the New England Culinary Institute.

    Gateway Community College

    • Gateway Community College has been serving the greater New Haven area for over 30 years. Gateway's 30-credit-hour certificate program in culinary arts is open to both full-time and part-time students. The program is designed to prepare students for a career in the food-preparation industry and includes both classroom and laboratory learning. Students are required to purchase uniforms, books and knives for the program. Another part of the program is preparing and serving meals at Café Vincenzo, the dining room at Gateway's Long Wharf Campus. Students complete three credit-hours of work experience/internship, and course topics include principles of food preparation, baking and pastry arts, sanitation and safety, quantity food production, principles of dining service, culinary nutrition, international foods and catering and event management.

    Norwalk Community College

    • About 5,000 students attend Norwalk Community College in Fairfield County. NCC has a 30-credit culinary arts certificate program designed to prepare students for jobs in commercial food operations. Students who want to earn an associate's degree can apply all but two of the required culinary arts classes to NCC's foodservice management degree program. Course topics include applied nutrition, food-preparation principles, food production and purchasing, sanitation and safety, baking and pastry arts, international foods and catering and event management.
