Culinary Colleges in Arizona

Nearly 1 million people make their living as a chef or cook in America, and jobs are expected to grow by 6 percent through 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While a degree is not required to succeed, the majority have some sort of postsecondary training. If you're looking to gain employment in the food industry in the Grand Canyon state, consider one of its culinary colleges.
  1. Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts

    • Train at the famous cooking school Le Cordon Bleu without traveling to Paris. The culinary college has two campuses in Scottsdale, Arizona. It offers a bachelor's degree in culinary management, associate degrees in patisserie and baking, occupational studies in culinary arts and hospitality and restaurant management. The school also offers certification in culinary arts and patisserie and baking.

The college's two campuses are located within minutes of each other. Camelback Campus, the original, houses the college's education department, library and resource center, kitchens and classrooms for learning and the student-run restaurant, L'Ecole. The second campus, Sky Bridge, is located in Old Town Scottsdale near Fifth Avenue and houses classrooms, kitchens, administrative offices and a second student-run restaurant, L'Academie.

    The Art Institute

    • Choose from two locations when enrolling at the Art Institute--Phoenix or Tucson. Then select one of the school's two culinary degrees: Baking and pastry or culinary arts. The Phoenix location also offers a third degree choice, culinary management.

As a baking and pastry major, you'll focus on essential pastry and bread-baking techniques, with additional study in desserts and cake decoration. Graduates from this program typically work at bakeries, catering houses and institutional settings, such as schools.

The culinary arts program is broader, giving students experience in the kitchen as well as education on the business side, such as cost control, safety and nutrition. Graduates begin their careers as line or pantry cooks.

Culinary management majors stay out of the kitchen, focusing more on employee relations, communications, training and the financial aspects of running a business. They don't seek employment as cooks, but rather as restaurant or catering managers.

    Arizona Culinary Institute

    • Also located in Scottsdale, The Arizona Culinary Institute offers diplomas in culinary arts, baking and restaurant management and can be completed in as few as nine months. The program begins with six weeks focusing on the foundations of culinary arts, but the program is designed to revolve around a kitchen instead of a classroom.

Arizona Culinary Institute has five kitchens, all professionally designed. Each space is dedicated to a different function of the program, ranging from the advanced baking kitchen to the basic culinary arts kitchen. Additionally, the institute houses a library and three classrooms/demonstration rooms, as well as a student-run restaurant, du Jour, which is open to the public for lunch.
