St. Philip's College in San Antonio, Texas, is one of the country's oldest community colleges, founded in 1898 to educate the area's population of emancipated slaves. St. Philip's has been affiliated with San Antonio College since 1942, and became integrated in 1955. The Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts at St. Philip's College offers two culinary programs, a two-year associate degree and a one-year vocational certificate.
Shelton State Community College is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The school's culinary arts program is a two-year (six semesters) associate degree program designed for people with a passion for food and food service. The program features food preparation classes that teach basic kitchen safety, food preparation and management of a five-course meal, among other things. According to the school, "You'll learn about purchasing, nutrition...You also have the opportunity to learn about catering, menu development and effective management skills."
Trenholm State Technical College features the largest culinary arts program in the state of Alabama, offering a two-year associate degree or a one-year certificate program. In 2008, the American Culinary Federation Foundation Accrediting Commission named Trenholm State one of 22 exemplary culinary schools across the country.
Denmark Technical College was founded in 1947. It is located in Denmark, South Carolina, and primarily serves Bamburg, Allendale and Barnwell counties. Students from elsewhere in the state are eligible to enroll. Denmark Technical College is the only community college in South Carolina with on-campus housing. The culinary arts program at Denmark is a one-year vocational certificate course.
Coahoma Community College (CCC) is located in Clarksdale, Mississippi, on the banks of the Mississipi River. CCC was originally founded in 1924 as an agricultural high school and added the junior college curriculum in 1949. The school was opened to general enrollment in 1965. Current president Dr. Virginia Presley is the first woman to head a community college in the state of Mississipi. Culinary arts is delivered here as a one-year certificate program.
