Ohio Colleges That Offer Culinary Arts

In Ohio as in most of the world, restaurants and food service are big business. A college degree in culinary arts can provide the knowledge and skills to greatly expand your career opportunities. There are universities and colleges throughout Ohio that offer culinary arts training in all aspects of the food industry.
  1. University of Cincinnati/Cincinnati State Technical and Community College

    • The University of Cincinnati offers a bachelor of applied science program in culinary arts and science. It is only one of eight culinary programs in the United States that is approved by the Research Chefs' Association, and the only one in Ohio. The program is run in cooperation with Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, where all students spend the first two years of the program and earn an associate's degree in culinary arts. Even though students take classes at Cincinnati State, they are still eligible to live on the UC campus and participate in all university activities. Students then spend an additional three years studying at the University of Cincinnati. The first two years at Cincinnati State focus on food preparation, service and management. Once at UC, students focus more on the science of food, food processing technologies, product development, and manufacturing. In addition to traditional academic classes, all full-time students are also required to take part in a year-round co-op program that includes paid, on-the-job training in 13-week work sections. Graduates of the five-year program are able to move on to careers in food preparation, service, management, research and development, manufacturing, marketing and sales.

    The University of Akron

    • Founded in 1870, The University of Akron is a public university with a 218-acre campus and over 27,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Akron offers a two-year associate's degree program in hospitality management with a culinary arts option. Under faculty supervision, students prepare and serve meals in The Crystal Room, an on-campus restaurant. A 300-hour internship during one semester is also required.

    Cuyahoga Community College

    • Opened in 1963, Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) is both the oldest and largest community college in Ohio. Tri-C offers an associate's degree in hospitality management with a culinary arts concentration. The culinary arts program has been offered for two decades at Tri-C's Metropolitan Campus in Cleveland, and has also been available at Tri-C's Eastern Campus since Spring 2009. The program's curriculum follows American Culinary Federation guidelines and includes hands-on food preparation, kitchen management and supervision, menu planning, purchasing and cost control, customer service, and communication skills.
