Top Ranked Colleges in Ohio

The state of Ohio is home to several highly-ranked liberal arts colleges, including four ranked among the nation's top 70 colleges by US News and World Report. These four colleges have academic traditions with beginnings in the 19th century. All four of these top-ranked colleges belong to the Five Colleges of Ohio consortium.
  1. Oberlin College

    • Oberlin College, a private liberal arts college, was founded in 1833. Oberlin became one of the first institutions of higher education in the United States to admit black students in 1835, and the first to admit women in 1837. As of 2009, the school had about 2,850 students. The Oberlin College of Arts and Sciences offers 47 academic majors. Oberlin College also has a Conservatory of Music with degree programs designed to prepare students for careers as professional musicians and teachers. Oberlin College tied for 22nd in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.

    Kenyon College

    • Founded in 1824, the private liberal arts college Kenyon College is Ohio's oldest private college. As of 2009, the school had about 1,600 undergraduates. The college offers majors and minors within 18 academic departments and 13 interdisciplinary departments. All students must complete a senior thesis, known at Kenyon as the "Senior Exercise." Kenyon College tied for 33rd in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.

    Denison University

    • Denison University is a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1831. As of 2009, the school had about 2,000 undergraduates. Denison students can work toward bachelor's degrees in 48 academic majors within five main divisions, including fine arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and interdisciplinary studies. Denison also offers programs in 12 pre-professional fields. Denison University was ranked 53rd in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.

    College of Wooster

    • The College of Wooster, a private liberal arts college, was founded in 1866. As of 2009, the school had about 1,800 students. The College of Wooster has over 40 academic departments, as well as pre-professional programs in engineering, health and law. All College of Wooster, students must take a first-year seminar and complete a one-year independent study project in the senior year. The College of Wooster tied for 68th in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.
