Ohio Independent Colleges

The independent colleges in Ohio are private institutions that are funded through donations and student fees. Most of the independent colleges in Ohio are members of an organization such as the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges. These associations and organizations assist the private college in receiving funding to operate a number of schools located around the state. Research universities, single-purpose institutions, African-American colleges and religious institutions are all examples of independent colleges in Ohio.
  1. Baldwin-Wallace College

    • Baldwin-Wallace College is an independent private college concentrating their education of students in liberal arts. This Methodist-based independent college offers Bachelor's and Master's degree programs as well as professional education and certificate programs. Located in Berea, Ohio, a short drive from Cleveland, the independent college has more than 4,260 students attending classes on any given day. The athletics department provides student athletes 21 different athletic programs approved for Division lll intercollegiate sports.

    Hiram College

    • Hiram College is a small independent college of more than 1,200 students. The core of the college's education is liberal arts, where students can achieve a Bachelor's or Master's degree. The independent college boasts approximately 60 percent of the graduates attending graduate school at another college or university. 30 majors are provided by 73 full-time faculty members, making the student to teacher ratio 13 to one, along with an average class size of 16 students. The students can receive a Bachelor's of Science degree in Nursing.

    Lake Erie College

    • Lake Erie College is located on the banks of Lake Erie. Providing a host of programs and degrees to the students as well as internships and promoting study abroad at foreign colleges. The Painesville, Ohio, campus of this independent college offers 33 different majors to more than 1,300 undergraduate and graduate students. The student to teacher ratio is a mere 14 to one with an average class size of 14. The college has Bachelor's and Master's programs in both art and sciences including Master's in Business Administration (MBA).

    The College of Wooster

    • The College of Wooster is an Ohio independent college located just 45 minutes out of Akron. The college was established in 1866 and has grown to more than 2,000 students. The school concentrates on a study in liberal arts or music only offering students a Bachelor's degree in arts, music and music education. A 132 faculty members educate the students, making the student to faculty ratio 11 to one. This independent college offers the students programs in research, internships and the opportunity to study abroad in their chosen field of study.
