Colleges That Offer Culinary Courses

Students who would like to attend a traditional college as well as study culinary arts may do so at one of many colleges throughout the United States. College culinary arts programs are designed not only to teach students to cook or bake but also teach humanities and science courses. Graduates of college culinary arts programs are fully equipped to enter the world as professional cooks, bakers or management trainees.
  1. West Coast

    • The culinary arts program at South Seattle Community College asks culinary students to operate the cafeteria food line, deli and grill as part of their training. Pastry, specialty baking and food production are taught progressively to help students develop into professional bakers and chefs. The college has courses in wine and wine technology as well as restaurant and kitchen management. Orange Coast College, in Costa Mesa, California, offers courses accredited by the American Culinary Federation Foundation. Classes include culinary principles, principles of baking and garde manger. Orange Coast's culinary program participates annually in the American Culinary Federation Junior Member Hot Food Team Competition.

    Southwest

    • Colorado Mountain College offers a culinary arts program in European cuisine. Students do apprenticeships in high-end ski resorts in Aspen and Vail. An additional perk is the receipt of a free ski pass while studying. The Culinary Institute at Salt Lake Community College trains students toward an associate degree and subsequent certification as trained culinarians or pastry culinarians. Courses include menu design and herb horticulture.

    Heartland

    • Students of the culinary arts program at Milwaukee Area Technical College study food service sanitation, menu planning and design and dining room service techniques. American and ethnic cuisine is one of seven electives offered. Indian Hills Community College offers a seven-semester program that includes cold food principles, culinary management and food service technology. Math, social science and communication or English are additional requirements of the degree.

    East Coast

    • Salter College in West Boylston, Massachusetts offers a culinary arts program complete with certificate. The program develops culinary students into professionals through courses in nutrition, sanitation, cooking and baking. Students will also receive instruction in working as personal chefs or caterers. Atlantic Cape Community College in Atlantic City, New Jersey offers an associate degree in the culinary arts. Approximately 75 percent of the course is hands-on training.

    Gulf Coast

    • Keiser University offers an associate degree in culinary arts. The program includes courses in basic meat sciences, stocks and sauces, American regional cuisine and international cuisine. Galveston College Culinary Arts Academy provides associate degrees or culinary management certificates. The school trains students in advanced pastry baking and restaurant marketing.
